NEWS-LEDGER – OCT 12, 2011 –
River City High’s football squad traveled to Galt last Friday evening to take on high-scoring Liberty Ranch in the Hawks’ homecoming game.
Liberty Ranch’s JV team dominated River City, winning by a final score of 47-6, with Iszir Price scoring the only River City touchdown. The score came on a pass from quarterback Corey Lane for a 60 yard touchdown play.
The RCHS varsity team ended up on the short end of a heartbreaking, 29-28 overtime loss.
The first half was an offensive back-and-forth affair, with Liberty holding a slim 21-19 lead. The Raiders tied the score in the 3rd quarter with a safety coming on a punt return.
The Hawks missed two field goals, the last one being a 31 yard attempt with 28 seconds remaining, and that sent the game into overtime.
River City scored first on a ten yard pass and extra point to take a 28-21 lead. Liberty then scored on a reverse and decided to go for a two point conversion. A sweep around left end was good, ending the game at 29-28.
Halfback Uriah Clark had a inspirational game for the Raiders. He rushed for 184 yards on 20 carries, often dragging Hawk defenders along the way. Raider quarterback Tucker McAmoil was 6-11 for 109 yards and three TD’s. Defensive tackle Tevita Mafi, linebacker William Leggat and defensive end Junior Chean led the way for the Raider defense.
An obviously disappointed Head Coach Art Bustamante had this to say after the game:
“This is a tough one to swallow. But I’m so impressed with how our team competed. We played with toughness and passion. It just didn’t go our way.”
The Raiders have a bye next week and will face Galt Warriors in Galt on October 21.
