NEWS-LEDGER — MARCH 28, 2012 –
From River City High School
Led by girls’ singles players Jai London and Cindy Oseguera, the River City High School tennis team earned a pair of Sierra Valley Conference (SVC) wins last week. With London at the #1 spot and Oseguera in the #2 position earning straight-set wins against both Cosumnes Oaks and Union Mine, RC improved to 3 and 0 in the SVC this season, and 7 and 1 overall in 2012.
In defeating CO 6-3 and UM 8-1, RC also dominated the doubles play, particularly down the lineup in the #2 girls and #2 boys contests. Avneet Singh and Lina Vang won twice on the girls side, as did teammates Amran Khan and Matthew Tagupa on the boys half. Oddly, all four of the matches by these two pairs had identical 6-2,6-2 scores.
At #1 girls doubles, Sarah Yang partnered with Christine Maltez for an easy 6-1,6-0 win against Cosumnes Oaks and then teamed up with Mary Neverov for a 6-1,6-3 victory against Union Mine. Neverov also earned a win in mixed doubles versus Cosumnes Oaks as she combined with Phillip Dinh to cruise 6-1,6-1.
Against UM, the Raiders also received some solid play from boys singles players Terry Vang and Michael Lee. Vang came from 0-6 down to take the next two sets 6-4,6-4 at #1, while Lee won 6-2,7-5 at #2. In #1 boys doubles, Edward Xu and Zoi Saetern earned a hard-fought 6-4,6-4 victory.
The Raiders host El Dorado today, West Campus on Thursday, Lincoln on April 3 and Marysville on April 4. All these are home matches beginning at 4 p.m. except the April 3 match, which starts at 3:30.
