“Spring Break is a break from school, not from tennis,” River City High School tennis coach Dave Brooks often says. So last week, while many were away on vacation, the Raiders narrowly defeated Lincoln 5 to 4, blew out Marysville 9 to 0, and came in first place at the Quincy Invitational Tournament.
Against Lincoln, Sarah Yang won 10-2 at #2 girls singles and Michael Lee squeaked past his opponent 10-9 (5) at #2 boys singles. RC dropped the two boys doubles matches, but swept the three girls and mixed doubles contests. Cindy Oseguera and Lily He won 10-4 at #1 girls doubles, Mariana Contreras and Avneet Singh clinched the overall match with their 10-1 win at #2 girls doubles, and Lina Vang and Muradan Chhay held on for a 10-6 victory in mixed.
In the Marysville match, the Raiders rolled to easy wins throughout the lineup. Terry Vang shut out his opponent at #1 boys singles 10-0, Jai London lost just one game at #1 girls singles, Oseguera won 10-3 at #2 girls singles, and Lee triumphed 10-5 at #2 boys. Yang and Le had a 10-1 result in the top girls doubles match, the pairs of Edward Xu and Phillip Dinh (#1 boys) and Christine Maltez and Chhay (mixed) only lost 2 games each, Vang and Singh lost just three at #2 girls, and Matthew Tagupa and Alan Tern won 10-6 at #2 boys. RC is now 9 and 1 overall in 2012.
Individual event results were as follows:
Girls Doubles: Mary Neverov/Avneet Singh, 1st place; Mariana Contreras/Katie Bowman, 2nd place
Boys Doubles: Amran Khan/Alan Tern, 1st place; Edward Xu/Zoi Saetern, 2nd place
Mixed Doubles: Neverov/Saetern, 2nd place; Bowman/Tern, 3rd place
Girls Singles: Singh, 3rd place; Contreras, 4th place
Boys Singles: Xu, 3rd place; Khan, quarterfinalist
Next home match is on Friday against Liberty Ranch, with tennis action starting at 3 p.m. The Raiders will also host Vista Del Lago at RCHS on Tuesday at 4.
