River City High School varsity soccer had their biggest game so far in the season against the undefeated Galt soccer team Friday. River City went into this game undefeated in league with a 2-0 record.

A win would put River City in first place in the league. Both teams understood the importance of this game and what was at stake.  And it was back-and-forth once the ref blew the whistle to start the game.

Galt immediately put the ball in the back of the net but it was called offsides. That was a wakeup call for the Raiders.

Ten minutes into the game, River City got the crowd fired up with a goal from Mario Zambrano with the assist from Manuel Moreno.

The game went on with two yellow cards given to Galt which caused one of the coaches from Galt to be red carded off the field for his fiery complaints. The half ended with River City in the lead and Galt down a goal and a coach.

RCHS Coaches Kamal Singh and Jesse Melgoza let the players know that a 1-0 lead is very hard to keep in an intense game like this. There was still another 40 minutes to play and that this game was far from over, anything could happen.

The whistle for the second half blew and the intensity picked up enormously right from the start. At 33 minutes, Galt got a free kick at the edge of the goal box. The shot hit the defensive wall and a Galt player elbowed one of River City’s players which resulted in their player getting a red card.

A few minutes later, River City goalkeeper Christian Terrones got kicked in the face in a 50/50 ball in the box. The Galt player responsible got a red card, too, and was escorted off the field.

With 10 minutes remaining in the game, River City put the nail in the coffin with a goal from Juan Ortiz which gave River City at a comfortable 2-0 lead. River City finished victorious and are now 3-0-0 and in first place in league.

The River City junior varsity also won, 2-1.

In other RCHS sports, the Raiders’ girls varsity volleyball team reports a 3-0 win over Laguna Creek on Thursday. The RC jayvees and freshmen also won their matches, both with a score of 2-0.
