FROM THE NEWS-LEDGER — OCT 9, 2013 –

A West Sacramento “Friends of the Poor”  walk drew about 100 people on September 28, and raised about $4,000 for charity.

Event representative Paul Starkey reports that dozens of people did the two-mile walk hosted by Our Lady of Grace Conference at the Our Lady of Grace private school on Linden Road. Walkers stepped out to a path through the surrounding Southport neighborhoods and on the Clarksburg Trail.

The local money went to the St. Vincent de Paul Society, said Starkey. That organization provides emergency help to those in need, offering food, rent, utilities and meal programs.

The “Friends of the Poor” walk was also a nationwide event supporting St. Vincent de Paul. Organizes held similar events inSacramento and Lincoln.

West Sacramento’s Fire Station 45 crew showed up to the West Sacramento walk, giving “kids of all ages” a chance to look at some fire equipment.
