River City High School’s girls soccer team won its “Raider Cup Classic” tournament held Feb. 28 and March 1.

The rainy-weekend victory came over 11 visiting varsity teams from Summerville to Nevada Union.

The Raiders faced Armijo High in the finals on Saturday. It was a game of “continuous action,” reports RCHS coach Kamal Singh, with River City prevailing 2-0.

The Raider varsity was anchored on the offense by Jaylem Crim and Keionna Claypoole; in the midfield by Andrea Salcedo, Taylor Martin and Crystal Carroll; and on defense by Annie Wampler, Valeria Salcedo, Marinna Vigil, Melissa Whitesell, Dianerick Ramirez and goalkeeper Erin Delany.

The Raiders defense yielded zero goals during the whole tournament, helping to win its preliminary tournament matches 5-0, 7-0 and 1-0.
The team lost sophomore starting center Hildelice Medina to a season-ending knee injury in the second game.

“You learn to make adjustments,” said Coach Kamal Singh later. “Soccer is a team sport, and I told the girls they had to step up to fill the void of not having Hildelice. (Winning) this tournament was no accident. These girls have been training hard and wanted to win this tournament and make River City Girls Soccer history.”

The team is off to a 7-0 start to its season.
