Raider girls fend off league rivals

On Friday, Jan. 20, the River City High School girls basketball teams faced the El Dorado Cougars in the Raiders’ home gym.

Leading up to this match, the El Dorado varsity was 5-0 in league play and River City was 4-0 in league play. So the evening’s contest would determine the leader in the division.

The quality of play lived up to the billing, and at halftime, the two teams left the court tied at 16-16.

El Dorado took the lead in the third quarter and was up by as many as five points. But River City rallied back, and with 36.3 seconds left in the third quarter, River City was up 31-28,

El Dorado then scored to trim River City’s lead to one point.

The game would end up being tied again 32-32 at one point in the fourth quarter, but River City began to put on some pressure defense, and held El Dorado to 32 while its offense kept chipping away.

River City would go on to win the game 41-32.

River City now improves to 19-1 overall, 5-0 in league play.

Freshman final score: 43-36 (El Dorado) ; JV – 53-17 (RCHS).
High Scorers: JV; Makaila Robinson – 18pts, Carmen Garcia – 12pts. Varsity: Katie King – 16, Tori Torres – 11. The Girls Basketball team will be home again on Feb. 7 against Union Mine.
