West Sac chemical spill & bio threat
NEWS-LEDGER ONLINE — JULY 18, 2012 —
The West Sacramento Fire Department reports that a leaking tote at a business on the 2200-block of Stone Boulevard spilled about 150 gallons of 30 percent sodium hydroxide solution, which an employee then improperly washed down a storm drain.
The incident occurred on June 26.
A business on the 800-block of Embarcadero drive reported receiving an envelope with a threatening statement along with an unknown white powdery substance on July 2.
After employees received and opened the package, they “isolated” it in plastic bags and a pail.
Local firefighters joined representatives from the West Sacramento Police Department, FBI, Yolo County Environmental Health and a representative from the Sacramento Fire Department Haz Mat Team in responding.
Fourteen employees were potentially exposed to the powder, but no injuries were reported. The substance was tested in a Sacramento crime lab and determined to be “non-biological,” reports the West Sacramento Fire Department.
