West Sac hosts rowing races Sunday
NEWS-LEDGER ONLINE — OCT 10, 2012 —
The River City Rowing Club in West Sacramento is hosting 19 rowing clubs from throughout California for a series of 5- kilometer rowing races on Sunday, October 14, from 8:00 a.m. to noon at the River City Rowing Club in the Port of West Sacramento.
The competitive races are held in the Deep Water Channel in West Sacramento. Boat crews assemble, launch and return to the host club, the River City Rowing Club adjacent to the Port of West Sacramento.
The event includes college teams from UC Berkeley, UC Davis and Sacramento State; high school teams; open-competitive class and masters’ teams. There are 180 entries racing the clock in 40 different heats.
[adrotate group=”7″] Rowers will be on site setting up at 6:00 a.m. and launching from docks at approximately 7:45 a.m. Sunday.
To view the race: Best viewing is from the levee on the south side of the Deep Water Ship Channel. Spectators are encouraged to park at the West Sacramento Lowe’s store and walk to the levee. Binoculars and lawn chairs may help you enjoy the action.
As a long-distance (about three miles) “head race” over a curved course, competitors start one after another in intervals and fight both the clock and each other. The winner in each division is the racer with the fastest time, but rowers are also trying hard to pass boats that started ahead of them while avoiding being caught from behind.
