FROM THE NEWS-LEDGER — DEC 5, 2012 —

Visit the Raley’s supermarket this weekend, and volunteers from River City High School will help you brighten the holidays for a local senior citizen.

The “senior gift program” is sponsored by the West Sacramento Rotary Club, reports the Rotary’s Charyl Silva.

Seniors at the Eskaton Woodrow Wilson Manor in West Sacramento, and those served by the local senior center or Meals on Wheels program, have been invited to sign up to receive a gift. Those interested put their name and gift request on a card.

[adrotate group=”9″] This weekend from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, volunteers from River City High School (coordinated by the students’ Interact Club) will be at Raley’s with the gift requests. Shoppers will be invited to fulfill a gift request for a local senior.

“We then wrap the gift with love, and later deliver the gifts,” said Silva.

The Interact Club is also arranging some Christmas carol singing for the event, and for a possible side trip to the senior citizens at Eskaton.

You may also contribute to the gift program by calling Silva at 372-8383.

Repeat robbery at West Sac gas station

FROM THE NEWS-LEDGER — DEC 5, 2012 —

The Valero gas station and convenience store on the west end of West Capitol Avenue was robbed at gunpoint on Friday.

Twice.

At 6:52 a.m., police received a reported that “two males with guns” had just robbed the establishment at 4790 West Capitol.

Then, at 8:38 p.m., they received a report that another “211” had just occurred. Two subjects with at least one gun had just hit Valero again, according to dispatchers’ notes reviewed by the News-Ledger.

The gas station’s location, near the onramp to I-80 westbound, might make it an attractive target for robbers looking for a quick escape route.

[adrotate group=”7″]    The News-Ledger asked Lt. Tod Sockman of the West Sacramento Police Department if the two robberies appeared related.

An investigator “is doing some work on that, seeing if there is any link, or it’s just a coincidence,” he said. Early indications are that the suspects in each case were different.

The News-Ledger was not immediately able to reach Valero by phone for comment, and to find out if the same clerk had been involved in both robberies – although that seemed unlikely, given the 10-hour spacing between the crimes.

West Sac man arrested for church lot shooting

NEWS-LEDGER ONLINE — DEC 1, 2012 —

A spokesman for the West Sacramento Police Department reports that an arrest has been made after the shooting early this morning in a Christmas tree lot at 1000-block of Sacramento Avenue.

Police arrested Brian Brinsfield a 20 year old West Sacramento resident, at about 2 p.m. He will be booked into the county jail, reports Sgt. Nathan Steele of the WSPD.

[adrotate group=”7″]Shortly after midnight this morning, police believe Brinsfield tried to steal a Christmas tree from a lot at a Russian Baptist church. When confronted by a guard, he allegedly fired shots before fleeing. No injuries are reported.

A witness was involved in identifying Brinsfield as a suspect, said Sgt. Steele.

“He was positively identified as a suspect and arrested at 1228 Sacramento Avenue,” Steele told the News-Ledger.

The arrest was made without incident at the location, which was linked to Brinsfield by police. No weapon has yet been recovered — but police have just begun searching the home, said Steele.
