RC tennis team: conference champs

FROM THE NEWS-LEDGER — MAY 1, 2013 —

From River City High School

For the 17th time in the past 18 seasons, the River City High School Tennis Team has won a league championship.  Last week’s 5 to 4 win at Cosumnes Oaks clinched the 2013 Sierra Valley Conference (SVC) title for the Raiders, bringing the total number of league championships in RC’s tennis history to 19.

The visiting Raiders started off slowly, dropping both boys singles matches at Cosumnes Oaks, but Cindy Oseguera (6-4,6-3 at #1) and Lily He (6-4,6-1 at #2) came through in girls singles.  It was a similar story in doubles as RC lost both boys doubles contests while getting wins from the girls pairs of Sarah Yang and Sonia Bola, 4-6,6-2,(10-2) at #1, and Nicole Melido and Julia Quenga, 6-0,6-0 at #2.  With the league title on the line, the mixed doubles duo of Lina Vang and Phillip Dinh brought home the pennant with their 6-3,6-2 triumph.

Also last week, at the SVC Singles and Doubles Tournament, Michael Lee and Lina Vang won the mixed doubles championship to qualify for this week’s Sac-Joaquin Section Tournament.  Lee and Vang defeated teams from Cosumnes Oaks (10-2 in the quarterfinals), El Dorado (6-3,6-3 in the semis), and Vista del Lago (6-3,6-3 in the final.)  Teammates Oseguera and Yang will be joining them at the Section tourney as they came in second place in the SVC girls doubles event.  The defending SVC and Section girls doubles champs came up short in the final to a pair from Vista del Lago, 6-2,3-6,(7-10), but are eager to try to repeat their 2012 result in Stockton at the Section tournament.

Other results from the SVC Tournament:  Edward Xu and Ben Gerelkhuu took fourth place in boys doubles while Matthew Tagupa and Muradan Chhay reached the quarterfinals.  In mixed doubles, Amran Khan and Sonia Bola came in third place.  Lily He reached the quarterfinals in girls singles and Nicole Melido won the girls singles consolation championship by defeating the top players from both Galt and El Dorado.  In the boys singles consolation event, Phillip Dinh downed teammate Akshay Prabhakar in the final.

Next up for the Raiders, in addition to the Section singles and doubles tournament, are the Section Division III team championships.  RC will play either Marysville or Highlands in the Round of 16 and a win will allow the Raiders to host a quarterfinal match on Monday, May 6th at 4pm against the winner of the Argonaut vs. Colfax match.
