Fathers of newborns: get some skills

Fathers can learn hands-on skills for helping to raise newborns – including the “ever-popular diaper toss,” promises First 5 Yolo.
Three “Daddy’s Tool Bag,” workshops are planned, including one from 5:30-7 p.m. on Feb. 22 at West Sacramento’s library, 1212 Merkley Avenue.
The free workshops are led by a dad, Ted Hendricks, and will also cover skills such as swaddling the newborn, helping during breastfeeding, and comforting a baby. Free, and participants get a T-shirt and DVD (in English & Spanish). Call (530) 669-2475 to sign up or learn about workshops elsewhere in the region.
Celebrating a pioneering children’s story

The Yolo County Library is celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Caldecott Medal-winning children’s book “The Snowy Day,” which “was one of the first books to feature an African-American child in a main role that appeals to all children.”
Storytime programs at the West Sacramento branch, 1212 Merkley Avenue, will feature the book as follows: for kids age 1-3, visit “Mother Goose on the Loose at 11:15 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 21; Russian storytime for kids age 3-6, 6:15 p.m. on Wed., Feb. 22; age 0-1, “Hug-a-Bye Baby,” at 11:15 a.m. on Feb. 23; preschool storytime for ages 3-6 at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 24; and bilingual English/Spanish storytime for kids age 2-6 at 10:30 a.m. on Sat., Feb. 25.

Fun activities on Saturday for kids

The West Sacramento Friends of the Library plan an “Everybody has a Heritage” event beginning at 11:30 a.m. on Feb. 4 at the library, 1212 Merkley Avenue. Organizers plan a fun event with music and dancing from different cultures, centering around reading and literature. School-age children and their parents are invited.
Library supporters plan annual dinner

The West Sacramento Friends of the Library will hold their annual dinner meeting on Oct. 25 at the VFW Hall, 905 Drever Street. 6 p.m. social hour, 6:30 p.m. dinner. $10, catered by the Club Pheasant. Free movies at the library
Free movies are now a ‘regular thing’ at the local library!
Movies selected for grown-ups are featured at 5:30 p.m. on Mondays in the community room, and movies for kids are featured at 2 p.m. on Saturdays. The program is in place for the next year at 1212 Merkley Ave. The theme for October is “from books to movies.” Find a listing of films and dates at the library.
