Committee: don’t sell school land
NEWS-LEDGER — MARCH 21, 2012 —
A citizen’s committee charged with studying the real estate owned by Washington Unified School District has recommended that the district not sell off any “surplus” property at this time.
But the committee recommended that WUSD “evaluate the advantage of consolidation of site usage or joint facility usage to make any future liquidation easier.”
“For example,” it told district officials, “if the District Administrative Offices (at 930 Westacre Road) were moved from their current location, the city block they vacate would become more marketable for development. . . (T)he District Offices, the Yolo Education Center, and surrounding properties hold a higher potential for development based on the proximity to transit and city services.”
Committee members were Carrie Buchmiller, Dani Langford, Ron Morazzini, Karri Pina, Diane Smith, Matthew Wilkins, Patricia Flint, Larry Langford, Don Stauffer, Henry Walker and Dave Blake.

Wal-Mart is considering the installation of solar energy panels on the rooftop of its West Sacramento store, as part of a campaign to put the panels on about 65 stores in the state. The plan is for installer SolarCity to own, install and maintain the panels.
According to the company, the panels are expected to generate up to 70 million kilowatt hours of energy and prevent 21,700 metric tons of carbon dioxide from going into the air. The panels would also generate 20-30% of a store’s energy needs while saving money and creating jobs, claims Wal-Mart.
The Ikea store near Wal-Mart in the Reed Avenue area finished its own solar project this summer, plugging in a 65,000-square foot array of over 2,500 panels and “aiming for 795,500 kWh of clean electricity annually – the equivalent of reducing 630 tons of carbon dioxide, eliminating the emissions of 109 cars or powering 69 homes yearly,” said an Ikea spokesperson.
West Sacramento Realtors Chris Palamidessi and Marty Swingle formed Capital West Realty at 1355 Halyard Drive, Suite 100, in West Sacramento. The pair formerly worked at Lyon Real Estate’s office in Southport.
Palamidessi is owner/broker at the new firm.
“I am excited to embark on this new venture with Marty Swingle and look forward to continuing and exceeding our performance records,” he remarked in a press release.
The pair are both West Sacramento residents. Palamidessi is part of the family that owns the longtime Club Pheasant restaurant, and is involved in the Our Lady of Grace school and parish, and in a local Rotary Club.
Swingle is president of the Yolo chapter of Habitat for Humanity, serves on a city housing commission – and plays drums for a local band called “Lady and the Tramps.”
An Elk Grove man has applied for a city permit to open a “Fitness Systems” gym at 2531 Evergreen Avenue in West Sacramento. A city agenda item describes the project as about 25,000 square feet, and slated for weights, a cardio room, aerobics room, locker rooms and child care in a building owned by the Ramos Trust.
The gym would provide a fitness alternative to the city recreation center in Southport and to Muscle Systems, a Sacramento Avenue gym in the north. Another private gym on 15th Street in central West Sacramento went out of business earlier this year.
Buckeye Terminals at 1700 South River Road has applied for an extension of a city permit to operate and offload rail cars carrying ethanol. The terminal was formerly known as BP/Arco, and is part of an old industrial region along the Sacramento River for which local officials ultimately have other plans. The city hopes to phase out the “tank farms” along the river and replace them with more upscale land uses.
The permit request will be heard Dec. 1 by the planning commission.
