Flood Preparedness Week kicks off in West Sacramento

NEWS-LEDGER ONLINE — OCT 20, 2014 —

Officials from the State Department of Water Resources, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the City of West Sacramento will come together to kick off “California Flood Preparedness Week” at a West Sacramento school on Tuesday.

The event is scheduled for 10 a.m. on Oct. 21 at Westmore Oaks Elementary School.

After a news conference, there will be a chance for students, parents, teachers and business owners to talk to experts about flood protection, flood insurance and related issues. There will be representatives from FEMA, the National Weather Service, California Office of Emergency Services and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

The event will also kick off a student poster contest that promotes flood protection.

Bulky waste dropoff week underway in City of West Sacramento

Looking to get rid of some old furniture, mattresses, box springs, cardboard or tires (up to nine)?

The City of West Sacramento’s next semi-annual “Bulky Waste Drop-Off” event will be held Wednesday, Sept. 24, through Saturday, Sept. 27, at 540 Harbor Boulevard. Hours are 4-7 p.m. on the weekdays and 9-3 on Saturday.

Free of charge. Bring proof of West Sacramento residency such as a city utility bill or driver’s license. Seniors (65+) and disabled residents may qualify to have their items picked up: call 617-4589.

Wood and green waste are not accepted at this event. They may be recycled at the Yolo landfill. Watch for a voucher for a free load in your August utility bill.

Drop off ‘bulky waste’ through Saturday

Drop off your old “bulky waste” items this week. The event continues today and tomorrow.

It is open to West Sacramento residents May 15-18, 4-7 p.m. on Wednesday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, at 540 Harbor Blvd. Accepted items include furniture, mattresses, box springs, cardboard and tires (limit of nine). Bring proof of West Sacramento residency (city utility bill or driver’s license). Those age 65+ or disabled can qualify to have your items picked up for free – call 617-4589.

Wood and green waste are not part of this event, but look for a landfill voucher in your April utility bill which is good for one free residential load of wood or green waste at the landfill.
