Gov. reverses parole for West Sac man

[adrotate group=”10″] FROM THE WEST SACRAMENTO NEWS-LEDGER — OCT 3, 2012 —

Yolo County District Attorney Jeff Reisig announced Sept. 21 that Governor Jerry Brown, Jr. has reversed a parole board decision to grant parole to West Sacramento convicted murderer Roger Moore.

In March, 1981, Roger Moore and Charles Williams robbed and beat to death Paul Ward, a 68-year-old amputee confined to a wheelchair. Ward’s half naked body was later found in a West Sacramento parking lot.

After a jury trial, a Yolo County Superior Court judge sentenced Moore to life in prison for murder and robbery.  This April, the Board of Parole Hearings found Moore suitable for parole, and scheduled a tentative release date from state prison.

The Yolo County District Attorney’s Office challenged the Board’s decision to release him, arguing that Moore had shown lack of insight into why he committed the crime, he had a mental illness, and he had no good plans for a post-parole life.

The governor issued his decision on September 14.   In reversing the Parole Board, Governor Brown stated, “When considered as a whole, I find the evidence I have discussed shows why he currently poses a danger to society if released from prison.”

Yolo County District Attorney Jeff Reisig praised Governor Brown’s decision.

“We are pleased that Governor Brown agrees that Moore’s release at this time would be irresponsible,” said Reisig in a press release.  “We just can’t release vicious killers like this into our society under these circumstances.”
